Pre-requisites

You must meet the following requirements to qualify to attend this course:

  • have successfully completed the HERA welding supervisor course and passed both Paper A & Paper B exams;
  • proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry;
  • proficiency in basic mathematics; and
  • the ability to write reports.

Qualifications – what’s in it for you?

On successful completion of the course, candidates will:

  • be able to perform essential duties of the welding inspector within the scope of AS/NZS 5131 Section 7 and Appendix I, including the revision and approval of welding procedures and weldersโ€™ qualifications; and
  • be able to report visual examination of welds in accordance with the standards and specifications.

Delivery format and location

This training has a one-week (40 hour) classroom component which is offered in Tฤmaki Makaurau, Auckland, followed by the Practical Exam on the Friday afternoon.

The Theory Exam is held online within the next week after the course.


Exam process

There are two exams:

  • Part 1 WI1 Welding Inspection Theory (1.5 hours) – held on the last day of the course
  • Part 2 WI1 Welding Inspection Practical (2.5 hours) – held online the week after the course

You need to meet the following requirements to qualify for these exams:

  • hold a HERA AS/NZS 2214 Welding Supervisor certificate; and
  • hold an optometrist certificate obtained within three months, which must be submitted with your application to sit this exam which validates you have unaided or corrected near visual acuity (in at least one eye) so that you are capable of reading N4 Times Roman type or Jaeger J1 at a distance of not less than 30cm on a standard reading chart.

It is important to note the following:

Candidates will be notified by both email and physical mail of the marks awarded for each paper and whether it is a pass or fail result.

Exam results are typically available within four weeks, provided all course fees have been paid. We kindly ask that you refrain from inquiring about results until this time has passed.

A long-time collaborator with HERA, Patrick has served on the HERA Welding Panel for over 16 years and is a founding member of the HERA ANB (Training) Board. Through his work at HERA he continues to leverage his technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to enhance welding capabilities and resilience in the heavy engineering sector.

Michail is an International Welding Engineer (IIW), a member of the Standards New Zealand and Australia Committees including WD-003 โ€œWeldingโ€ and is actively involved in the revision and updating of welding standards such as AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS ISO 3834, DR ISO 17607, AS/NZS 5131. He was also involved in establishing the Fabricator Certification Scheme (SFC) and is a Lead Auditor for this scheme.

Ozgur has worked extensively on the delivery of industrial plant projects globally in many roles at different levels in the fabrication and construction of boilers, reactors, pressure vessels, structural steels and piping systems of oil & gas, nuclear and thermal power (CCGT and coal fired) plants in Turkiye, Russia, Albania, Libya and Iraq. He was a lecturer of welding inspection courses at international training organisations in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia and South America.

Do I have to do the exams straight after this course?

Yes, the Practical is held on the last day of the course, and the Theory exam is held on a day in the following week, following the course online.

How often is this course held?

The course is offered twice a year.

Does the course fee cover the exams?

No, exam fees are additional.

The pathway for qualification is as follows:

Welding Supervisor qualification AS/NZS 2214-2019: Certification of welding supervisors โ€“ Structural steel welding as required by AS/NZS 5131 and the Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) scheme.

Welding Inspector qualifications; this course is the prerequisite for:

HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 including Certificate of Proficiency in Visual Testing of Welded Joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637, and IIW International Welding Inspector IWI-B.

CBIP Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) this covers the welding technology โ€œKnowledge Requirementsโ€ (Ref. CBIP Doc. No PRO-CER-07).

I have an international welding qualification, can I transfer the qualification to Aotearoa New Zealand or skip the welding supervisor course and just do the welding inspector qualifications?

Unfortunately, no. Our qualifications are to Aotearoa New Zealand standards which will be different to what you have learnt overseas. As such, youโ€™ll need to demonstrate understanding of New Zealand Standard requirements which are gained in this course.

Do I have to do the welding supervisor course first?

Yes. For HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 and IIW qualifications this course is mandatory to complete and pass before you are able to register.

This exam is available to those who have successfully completed the HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 course. It provides you with qualifications of HERA Welding Inspector โ€“ steel structures and a HERA certificate of proficiency in visual testing of welded joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637:2019, allowing you to perform the essential duties of a welding inspector within the scope of AS/NZS 5131 Section 7 and Appendix I.

This exam is available to those who have successfully completed the HERA Welding Supervisor course. It provides you with either a HERA certificate of attainment for CBIP elevating work platforms inspectors, or a AS/NZS 2214 2214 certificate for HERA Welding Inspector WT1 module candidates (dependant on the papers taken).
