Exam content

This exam consists of two parts.

Part 1 – WI1 Welding inspection theory.

This is a 1.5 hour written exam covering the IWI-B inspection theory.

Part 2 – WI1 Welding inspection practical.

This is a 2.5 hour practical exam to test your ability to apply inspection techniques.

Both exams have to obtain a ‘PASS’ mark to achieve the qualification.

Pre-requisites

You must meet the following requirements to qualify to attend this course:

• have successfully completed the HERA welding supervisor course and passed both Paper A & Paper B exams;
• completed the HERA Welding Inspector, Level 1 course; and
• hold an optometrist certificate obtained within three months, which must be submitted with your application to sit this exam which validates you have unaided or corrected near visual acuity (in at least one eye) so that you are capable of reading N4 Times Roman type or Jaeger J1 at a distance of not less than 30cm on a standard reading chart.

Qualifications – what’s in it for you?

On successful completion of the exam, candidates will achieve:

• HERA Welding Inspector – Steel Structures; and
• HERA Certificate of Proficiency in Visual Testing of Welded Joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637:2019

The course content complies with the HERA requirements for the training of welding inspection personnel.

On the completion of the course, the candidates will be able to perform essential duties of the welding inspector within the scope of AS/NZS 5131 Section 7 and Appendix I including the revision and approval of welding procedures and welders’ qualifications, and reporting visual examination of welds in accordance with the standards and specifications.

Delivery format and location

The practical exam (Part 2 – WI1 Welding inspection practical) is held on the last day of the Welding Inspector Level 1 course in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland.

The theory exam (Part 1 – WI1 Welding inspection theory) is held online in the following week after the in person course.

Exam process

On your application being accepted to attend the exams, you will be sent detailed instructions via email.

On completion of your exam, you will be emailed your exam results of either PASS or FAIL. 

Please allow four weeks for these results (or to make enquiries about your results).
