Course content

This course covers AS/NZS 2214 syllabus and Module 1 of the Welding Inspector Welding Technology requirements.

• The role and responsibilities of the welding supervisor and inspector
• Welding processes
• Welding procedure qualification
• Welding metallurgy
• Construction and design
• Welder qualification to AS/NZS 2980 and AS/NZS ISO 9606.1
• Fabrication and welding for seismic applications
• Compliance with welding and fabrication standards
• Weld defects and acceptance criteria

This course also covers quality management systems to AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS 5131, SFC and AS/NZS ISO 3834.

Facilitators will make extensive references to AS/NZS 1554 Structural steel welding – Part 1: Welding of steel structures.

Students must bring their own copy of the standard to the course.

Pre-requisites

You must meet the following requirements to qualify to attend this course:

• proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry;
• proficiency in basic mathematics; and
• a minimum of three years experience in the welding/fabrication industry.

Qualifications – what’s in it for you?

On successful completion of the course, candidates will achieve:

• the Welding Supervisor qualification AS/NZS 2214-2019: Certification of welding supervisors – Structural steel welding as required by AS/NZS 5131 and the Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) scheme; and
• the HERA Certificate of Attainment covering the welding knowledge requirements for CBIP Elevating Work Platforms Inspectors – (Ref CBIP Doc. No: PRO-CER-09).

Completion of this course leads to:

HERA Welding Inspector Level 1

NB. To progress to HERA Welding Inspector Level 1, you must be able to show relevant experience in the metal working industry.

Delivery format and location

This training has a one-week (40 hour) classroom component which is offered in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland and Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

A distance learning component on the HERA e-learning platform follows the classroom course which has a series of assignments which must be completed.

Exam process

For the AS/NZS 2214 certificate and the HERA Welding Inspector WT1 module candidates must:

• attend the classroom course;
• complete the distance learning assignments; and
• pass two online examinations (65% pass mark):
  • Paper A Welding “Theory and Technology” (3-hour exam).
  • Paper B “Application of Standards” (2-hour exam).

For the HERA certificate of attainment candidates must:

• attend the classroom course or watch the online lectures;
• complete the distance learning assignments; and
• pass online examination Paper A Welding “Theory and Technology” (3-hour exam)

A long-time collaborator with HERA, Patrick has served on the HERA Welding Panel for over 16 years and is a founding member of the HERA ANB (Training) Board. Through his work at HERA he continues to leverage his technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to enhance welding capabilities and resilience in the heavy engineering sector.

Michail is an International Welding Engineer (IIW), a member of the Standards New Zealand and Australia Committees including WD-003 “Welding” and is actively involved in the revision and updating of welding standards such as AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS ISO 3834, DR ISO 17607, AS/NZS 5131. He was also involved in establishing the Fabricator Certification Scheme (SFC) and is a Lead Auditor for this scheme.

He was a lecturer of welding inspection courses at international training organisations in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia and South America.
