The cost of ‘quality’ – a HERA seminar
May 3, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Why attend?
Our lead team has developed an exclusive seminar focused on delving deeper into quality through the lens of their various strategic focus. So whether your interest lies in welding fabrication, structural systems, market development, industry insights, or networking – this seminar is for you.
What’s it about?
Globalisation of the structural steel market coupled with changes in Australasia’s steel making capability has made it very clear – ensuring product conformance is critical.
Over the past two decades New Zealand has sourced its structural steel long and plate products from around the world. Driven by a need to reduce project costs and meet supply demands.
While this has allowed constructors to remain competitive, it has also meant we’ve opened up our infrastructure to material compliance issues.
This fundamentally challenges the safety critical nature of structural steel components. An approach dictated by international best practice for steel fabricators quality control systems and adopted in AS/NZS 5131:2018.
It also has significant flow on effects to other aspects of a projects lifecycle such as design and fabrication.

Michail Karpenko | HERA General Manager Welding Centre
I’m an international welding engineer and member of Standards New Zealand and Australia committees including WD-003 “Welding.” This ensures I’m actively involved in the revision and updating of welding standards such as AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS ISO 3834, DR ISO 17607 and AS/NZS 5131. I was also instrumental in establishing the Steel Fabrication Certification Scheme (SFC) in collaboration with SCNZ.
Stephen Hicks | HERA General Manager Structural Systems
I’m a Structural Engineer with over 20 years’ research and development experience within the steel construction industry – providing professional services to clients across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
My ongoing areas of focus are steel-concrete composite buildings and bridges, development of design guides and standards, product development, structural dynamics, structural reliability, fire engineering, sustainability, light steel framing and software development.
Boaz Habib | HERA General Manager Industry Development
Bringing over 11 years’ experience working across multiple process industries research engineering and project management roles – I’m responsible for the general management, development and promotion of our small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in our membership. I facilitate this by intervening with latest technologies, government support pathways and educational initiatives to assist in growth.
As a champion for heavy engineering I’m focused on encouraging our members to take intelligent risk towards delivery and innovation and create their own track records in developing smarter solutions both nationally and abroad.
Philip Sanders | ACRS CEO
With over 25 years’ experience in the construction industry across scheme & structural design; project planning & project management; materials manufacture & fabrication; risk analysis; business analysis and senior management I’ve shown the shortcomings of “silo thinking” in operating successful and sustainable businesses.
My specialities include sustainable business practice, construction methods & materials; bench-marking; assessment & assurance; accreditation & certification; and more.
