Inspection for Welders – Structural Steel Welding to AS/NZS 1554 | E-Training (HERA Members Only)
August 31, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - September 30, 2021 @ 1:00 pm
Inspection for Welders – Structural Steel Welding to AS/NZS 1554 |
The first person who “inspects” a completed weld is, of course, the welder.
Many quality issues can be addressed at this level provided the welder has had the training required to comply with the Fabricator’s quality management system (QMS).
This on-linecourse provides the training required for welders to undertake inspection of their own work as the first step of in-house inspection to meet the requirements of Structural Steel Welding to AS/NZS 1554 and AS/NZS 5131. This includes visual checks to establish compliance of the weld with that required in the WPS and fabrication documentation. Introduction to welding QMS and welding inspection training for welders is included in this course.
Welding operations in the areas of steel structures, transport and maintenance must comply with AS/NZS 1554 series. The Building Code Appendix B1 references a range of other normative standards the fabricators shall comply with. But typically welders’ training has little or no coverage of these standards and their compliance requirements.
In order to successfully meet the compliance requirements of standards the welder needs to be able to read the welding requirements on the drawings, check the joint preparation, apply preheat and follow other requirements of the WPS in compliance with AS/NZS 1554. In addition, the welder must be confident in checking weld size and compliance with the SP weld category before signing off the job.
Training covers the inspection before, after and during welding including visual checks for welders to ensure compliance of the welds to the requirements of the WPS and specifications with reference to AS/NZS 1554.1 before the involvement of the welding supervisor or in-house inspector.
The course is delivered as a series of eight online e-Training sessions (45 min).
Each session includes a live presentation at 12:00pm followed by a Q&A session.
The recorded session will be available on-demand for the rest of the day.
The topics and presentation dates are:
- Weld information on drawings, weld symbols, terminology – 31 August
- Joint preparation and fit-up 1554.1, tools for checking joint preps – 2 September
- Preheat and inter-run temperature application and control – 7 September
- Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs) – 9 September
- Weld faults: compliance with 1554 acceptance criteria, Weld size checks and tools – 21 September
- Site welding, storage of welding consumables – 23 September
- Weld repairs – 28 September
- Welder’s responsibilities under Construction Categories to AS/NZS 5131 and SFC – 30 September
This e-Training offers the option of a Certificate of Achievement for Fabricators who wish to maintain evidence of their in-house training.
Participants can take an on-line quiz that can be done anytime on a computer or mobile phone. The Certificate is issued upon completion of the E-Training and quiz.
