This month,we’re offering Part 2 of the welding inspection training program leading to national and international qualifications.

Qualifications are:

  • CBIP Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), and
  • Globally-recognised IIW International Welding Inspector Basic (IWI-B), and International Welding Inspector-Standard (IWI-S).

The Centre is New Zealand’s only International Institute of Welding (IIW) Accredited Training Body (ATB).

People gaining these qualifications as welding inspectors may work either as “in-house” for fabricators, manufacturers or contractors, or as third party inspectors on behalf of clients and project managers.

Courses in weld inspection consist of:

  • Part 1 Welding Technology (that also doubles as the Welding Supervisor course) and
  • Part 2 Welding Inspection. This is based on the principle that a welding inspector should have at least the qualifications required for a welding supervisor.

The course content of Part 2 focuses on inspection activities:

  • The role and responsibilities of a welding Inspector
  • Welding terms and definitions
  • Mechanical testing on welded joints
  • Types and causes of weld imperfections
  • Welding procedures and welder qualification: witnessing, approval, and review
  • NDT techniques: visual inspection, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, pressure test, dimensional tests
  • Quality assurance and quality control

The course includes a balance of lectures, exercises and case studies, and practical work. For the IIW International Welding Inspector qualifications there are two options.

For the IWI-B the course is one week full time (40 hour). For the IWI-S an additional 24 hours are required in the form of three days in the following week.

Dates

  • IWI –B 17th – 21st (Monday to Friday) November
  • IWI –S 17th – 21st (Monday to Friday) November plus
  • 24th – 26th November (Monday to Wednesday the following week)

For those intending to take the CBIP Certified Welding Inspector examinations, the full programme of the Welding Supervisor and the 8-day inspection course is recommended, unless candidates have had equivalent training and relevant experience.
