In the world of engineering, there are women making a difference behind the scenes as much as in front of them! HR is one space where that is certainly happening.

That’s why we’d like you to meet Deb MacCauley who is GM People & Culture at Longveld in Hamilton.

Deb started out as a contractor carrying out a specific project to develop a leadership program for Longveld’s first line managers. And it was her strategic and proactive approach, and innate understanding of the need to front-foot change in the manufacturing sector to stay ahead of disruption that really impressed upon the company. Resulting in her securing a permanent role!

She now leads organisational development covering the four pillars of Longveld’s People & Culture strategy – mind, body, spirit and progression.

What do you love about your job?

That no two days are ever the same, and that there is always something interesting happening! At Longveld we are constantly looking at how we can do things better.

I also love that the people in our organisation are friendly and not pretentious – visitors often comment on it. Our people genuinely care about others and whatever frustrations may occur during the word day, everyone looks out for one another.

What are the key challenges facing women in Engineering?

Our biggest challenge is attracting women into Engineering! Does that mean women see Engineering as a male dominated industry and therefore it’s not attractive to them?

Perhaps there is a lack of understanding about what opportunities are available within the Engineering industry…

What impact do you want to make in your career?

I want to create a positive work environment.

I want to grow engagement, improve job satisfaction and increase productivity.

I want to ensure future relevance by challenging traditional mindsets and work practices.
