Additive manufacture also referred to as 3D printing is now playing an increasing role in a range of industries globally such as the aerospace, automotive and medical because it enhances the ability to fabricate more complex and more functional component parts. It utilizes technologies both metal and polymer to mass manufacture components directly from computer generated data. The products are grown/printed layer by layer without the need for many time-consuming manufacturing processes such as tooling, line set up or material change over. Fully functional parts or products are able to be produced, on an as needed basis, with many different components able to be built at the same time dramatically accelerating product’s time to market and reducing the cost of production. COVID-19 has provided further impetus for industries and countries to consider and adopt additive manufacturing to mitigate supply chain risks, increase sovereign capability and improve national security.
RMIT University recognised early the potential that additive manufacturing offered local industry and established the Centre for Additive Manufacturing in 2014 to support Australia’s manufacturing industry and boost the delivery of skills for this important sector of the economy.
The presentation will cover the mission and vision for the Centre, its facilities, the basis for interaction with industry and discuss several current research projects.

It will be held on four separate occasions to accommodate the four different regions of the globe: The Americas; Africa and Europe; Indian sub-continent and the Middle East, Asia and Australasia.

standards, regulatory, education, training and research organisations are welcome to attend.

Professor Milan Brandt
Distinguished Professor Milan Brandt is the Director of RMIT Advanced Manufacturing Precinct and Director Centre for Additive Manufacturing, RMIT University which he established in 2013. Prof. Brandt is the lead Australian researcher in the area of macro machining and additive manufacturing with lasers and has conducted work in laser cladding, cutting, drilling, welding and the last 14 years additive manufacturing. This has resulted in technological achievements, patents, research papers and commercial products, which have been recognized internationally and nationally in both scientific and industrial circles. Prof. Brandt is a Fellow of the Laser Institute of America, Honorary Fellow of Weld Australia, Professorial Fellow department of Medicine, Melbourne University and Adjunct Prof. University of Waterloo, Canada. In 2018 he was the President of the Laser Institute of America, the largest international association of researchers and industry involved with lasers and laser additive technology and in 2019 he was named the Engineers Australia Centenary Hero for his research which led to Australia’s first locally-manufactured 3D printed spinal implant that was implanted into a patient. In 2020 Prof. Brandt was the recipient of the Laser Institute of America’s Arthur. L. Schawlow award for his contributions to lasers and laser applications.
