The Slab Panel Method; recent developments in the design of composite slabs and supporting structural elements for dependable inelastic response in severe fires
October 19, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
With the continuous progress on structural fire research, a number of significant changes have been found that will further improve the design capacity of slab panels in severe fires. Meanwhile, the slab panel method (SPM) report is no longer consistent with fire safety design codes since the release of C/VM2. HERA is pleased to present this seminar to share the latest research progress on composite slabs and SPM software updates.
Key aspects to be covered:
- SPM background and development including incorporation into AS/NZS 2327
- Slab panel design procedure and detailing requirements
- Design of supporting steel beams and columns
- Ongoing research into performance of steel structures with composite slabs in severe fires
- Design example: application of SPM

- Structural Engineers who need to know about the latest structural fire design and detailing developments for composite floor systems and supporting steel structures.
- Fire Engineers keen to learn how structures would perform in severe fire and how structural engineers protect steel framed buildings from failure in fire.
- Deck manufacturers who keen to know about the updated Slab panel method and its advantages for composite flooring system
- Engineering students who want to learn about behaviour of composite flooring systems in fire, and would like to invest in their future professional career.
This seminar will be held in a hybrid format to allow online and in-person attendance. If less than 5 people attend the seminar at HERA house, we will make this seminar only online.
Half-day training event with flexibility as follows:
- In-person seminar at HERA house, Auckland for those who would like to attend in-person, or
- Join online and watch live seminar for those who would like to attend the seminar remotely, or
- Watch recorded videos for those who the seminar time and/or date does not work.
Dr. Charles Clifton | Associate Professor, University of Auckland
He has specialised in the behaviour and design of structural steel and composite structures since 1983. From 1983 to 2007 this was as Senior Structural Engineer at Heavy Engineering Research Association, where he conducted research in structural steel, composite construction, fire engineering and durability. He also made consideration contributions to the introduction of new and revised standards, developed widely used design guides and was actively involved in professional development. Since 2008 he has continued research and education in that area at the University of Auckland.
Dr Kawa Andisheh | HERA General Manager Structural Systems
Kawa is the General Manager of HERA structural systems. Among other activities, Kawa lead the structural systems strategy and programme of research, consulting, membership engagement and training activities within HERA to maintain its alignment with industry needs both currently and in the long term. He is a multi-Committee Member (AS/NZS) of Standards Australia and NZS Standards New Zealand. He was awarded a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Canterbury in 2017, and completed Doctorate studies in structural engineering at the Technical University of Milan in 2013, and he also hold a BSC and a MSc in Civil Engineering. Kawa is chartered member of Engineering New Zealand, CPEng, IntPE, and he is a chartered member of NZ institute of directors.
Fanqin Meng | HERA Structural Fire Engineer
Fanqin is a structural fire engineer in his early career stage at HERA. He has been involved in the structural fire research of composite steel structures from the view of structure assemblage during his PhD study at the University of Auckland. His ongoing areas of focus in HERA are mainly on the structural fire performance of composite structures, including but not limited to composite beams, composite columns and structural assemblages. He also has an open mind to broaden his research scope on fire-related topics.
Reza Kordani | HERA Structural Engineer
Reza is a structural engineer at HERA, managing HERA’s software packages, and is responsible for developing technical solutions for New Zealand steel industry. Reza has been exposed to a wide variety of steel projects in New Zealand including, design of steel buried culverts, seismic design of steel liquid tanks, retrofit of buildings with heritage values, and seismic restraint of non-structural components.
