Webinar: Weathering Steel Rail & Road Bridges Design, Construction & Maintenance
October 20, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - October 22, 2020 @ 2:00 pm
With the increased use of weathering steel in both Australian and New Zealand bridges the ASI and HERA are pleased to present a joint webinar to share the latest information on the design, fabrication, construction, in-service performance and maintenance of the weathering steel bridges.
The presentation will discuss the use and misuse of weathering steel, and its history of use in Australia and New Zealand. Based on relevant local (AS/NZS) and international standards; that are covered in the HERA Australian and New Zealand weathering steel bridge design guides.
Key Aspects to be covered:
- Material Selection and Mechanical Properties
- Design of weathering steel members
- Bolted connections
- Welding
- Fatigue
- Fabrication quality management
- Structural Detailing – drainage, water runoff
- Surface Appearance
- In-service Inspection
- And much more….

- Engineers who need to know about the latest design and detailing developments.
- Fabricators who need to learn the latest fabrication and construction information.
- Government Authorities keen to learn how weathering steel can provide the lowest whole of life cost option, whilst meeting the required design life and reducing health and safety risks.
- On demand Webcast Presentation (recorded video, audio & slides) available to view on 20 & 21 October.
- Live Q&A webinar (max. 1 hour) with presenter at 3.00 pm NZDT on 29tth October.
Raed El Sarraf | Technical Principal – Materials & Corrosion with WSP in New Zealand
Raed has extensive experience, in corrosion engineering and asset integrity management of structural steel (and other metallic) structures. This includes durability assessments, specifying protective coatings systems and detailing the correct use of corrosion resistant materials, such as weathering and stainless steels. He has also been involved in the publication of a number of articles, papers, and guidance documents in Australasia. These include the New Zealand and Australian versions of the Weathering Steel Guide for Bridges, as well as the New Zealand and Australian versions of the Steelwork Corrosion and Coatings Guide.
Michail Karpenko | General Manager of the HERA Welding Centre in New Zealand.
Michail holds a Mechanical & Welding Engineering degree and is an International Welding Engineer with experience in various research and industry projects in the field of welding technology in Germany and New Zealand. His research and professional interest cuts across a broad spectrum of design, analysis, and manufacturing. In particular, the design of welded joints for seismic and high cyclic fatigue applications, weldability, and corrosion performance of materials, quality control and smart manufacturing 4.0.
