Welding Inspector Level 1 Course | Auckland

This course provides training in welding inspection.
It leads to:
- HERA Welding Inspector – Steel Structures
- HERA Certificate of Proficiency in Visual Testing of Welded Joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637:2019
The course content complies with the HERA requirements for the training of welding inspection personnel.
On the completion of the course, the candidates will be able to perform essential duties of the welding inspector within the scope of AS/NZS 5131 Section 7 and Appendix I including the revision and approval of welding procedures and welders’ qualifications, and reporting visual examination of welds in accordance with the standards and specifications.

You need to meet the following requirements to qualify to do this course.
- Have successfully completed the HERA Welding Supervisor course and passed both Paper A & Paper B exams.
- Proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry,
- Proficiency in basic mathematics.
- The ability to write reports.
This course covers the scope of inspection activities as well as NDT techniques.

- Types and causes of weld imperfections
- Welding procedures, approvals and welder approvals
NDT techniques:
- Testing methods
- Visual inspection

- Radiographic testing
- Ultrasonic testing

- Dimensional tests
- Quality assurance
- Practical work
The standards covered in this course include AS/NZS ISO 17637, AS/NZS 1554 part 1, 2 and 3, AS/NZS ISO 5817, AS/NZS 2980, and AS/NZS ISO 9606.
There are two exams which are taken on the last day of the course week:
- Part 1 WI1 Welding Inspection Theory (1.5 hours online)
- Part 2 WI1 Welding Inspection Practical (2.5 hours)
You need to meet the following requirements to qualify to do these exams:
- Hold the AS/NZS 2214 Welding Supervisor certificate.
- An optometrist certificate obtained within three months must be submitted with your application to sit these exams. Unaided or corrected near visual acuity reading N4 Times Roman type or Jaeger J1 at a distance of not less than 30cm on a standard reading chart.
It is important to note the following:
Candidates will be notified by email and letter of the marks awarded for each paper, and the result – that is, PASS or FAIL.
Results can generally be expected within four weeks of exams given all course fees are paid. We request that you do not make contact for these details unless this time has passed.
