Welding Supervisor Course Online
June 27, 2022 @ 10:00 am - July 29, 2022 @ 12:00 pm
Venue: HERA e-Learning & Examination Platform (http://learning.hera.org.nz)
This course leads to the Welding Supervisor qualification AS/NZS 2214-2019: Certification of welding supervisors – Structural steel welding as required by AS/NZS 5131 and the Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) scheme.
For those wanting an inspector qualification, this course also covers the requirements of:
• Welding Technology 1 Module (WT1) for the HERA Welding Inspector Level 1, and the IIW International Welding Inspector (IWI-B).
• Welding technology “Knowledge Requirements” for the CBIP Certified Welding Inspector (Ref. CBIP Doc. No PRO-CER-07).
• Welding knowledge for CBIP Elevating Work Platforms Inspectors – (Ref CBIP Doc. No: PRO-CER-09).
The course is offered on-line over a 4-week period as an alternative to the face-to-face (classroom) course that is run in Auckland and Christchurch (subject to any Covid restrictions). It offers a structured learning environment but with more timing flexibility than the classroom course and avoids the cost of travel and accommodation for those from out-of-town.
The course is open to anyone seeking an in-depth understanding of structural steel welding and the associated standards, however there are examination prerequisites for those seeking a formal qualification – see “Examinations & Qualifications” tab.
This course requires proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry, and basic mathematics.
The course has a comprehensive syllabus and the on-line format requires commitment. While it is possible to do some parts of the course in out-of-work hours a structured approach of watching the lectures at the scheduled times offers the best chance of success.
The course format is a combination of self-study, on-line lectures, and assignments on the HERA e-Learning website.
Prior to the start of the course students will receive comprehensive printed course notes to enable them to be familiar with the content before each on-line lecture. Following the lecture, there are self-study assignments to be completed on the HERA e-Learning website.
The lectures are held each day from 10am to noon, and are available to students to watch again later if required.
Content covers the AS/NZS 2214 syllabus and the Welding Technology Module requirements of the HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 including IWI-B:
1. The role and responsibilities of the welding supervisor
2. Welding processes
3. Welding procedure qualification
4. Welding metallurgy
5. Construction and design
6. Welder qualification to AS/NZS 2980 and AS/NZS ISO 9606.1
7. Fabrication and welding for seismic applications
8. Compliance with welding standards and quality management systems e.g., AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS 5131, and AS/NZS ISO 3834

There are examination prerequisites for those seeking a formal qualification.
To take an examination students must have attended (have watched) the on-line lectures and completed the corresponding self-study assignments on the HERA e-Learning website.
For AS/NZS 2214 and Welding Technology 1 Module (WT1) there are 2 exams:
1. Paper A: Welding theory and technology 3 hours
2. Paper B: Application of standards 2 hours
The examination prerequisites are as follows:
1. AS/NZS 2214 Welding Supervisor Certificate – Three years experience in the welding/fabrication industry.
2. HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 Welding Technology Module – Three years of experience in the engineering industry.
Candidates who do not meet the prerequisites of AS/NZS 2214 but need to demonstrate welding knowledge for CBIP Elevating Work Platforms Inspector can take Paper A “Welding theory and technology” to gain a Certificate of Achievement.
Course applications will be assessed and the applicant advised of the examination prerequisites they meet.
