Malcolm Hammond
Managing Director, MJH Engineering
I am the Owner, Managing Director, and founder of MJH Engineering Limited. Based in Wellington, we specialise in the fabricating and erection of large structural steel structures, along with support to the manufacturing industry with factory maintenance and development work.
I founded MJH Engineering in 1982 as a sole trader, initially doing maintenance work for several sectors of manufacturing and abrasive blasting industries. This soon evolved to include large structural steelwork projects, which is now our core business. We now have a staff level exceeding 160.
I’ve been involved with some iconic and technically challenging projects throughout the Wellington region, such as the Victoria University Gateway building structure, the Deloitte office structure at 20 Customhouse Quay, the Clyde Quay apartments on the old overseas terminal site, along with some significant restrengthening including the Rankine Brown Lift-shaft after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. I enjoy the diversity and challenge that each new project brings.
Embracing innovation, automation, technology and compliance has helped keep me up to date in the ever-changing construction industry, including my involvement with the Steel Fabrication Certificate (SFC) initiative. I have been involved with both the SCNZ Board and the HERA Certification board over the past years.
I have always loved to create, build and innovate. The steel construction industry is a sector in which I proudly live and breathe. I am passionate about contributing to this sector and making it accessible from a grass roots level up.
I’m passionate about building the New Zealand metal industries presence in the market, along with developing people and their skills through training, education and encouragement, within my business and the greater metals industry – and a pathway to achieving this is by being part of the HERA Board and the conversations that work towards this.
