Our General Manager Structural Systems heads to Wyoming USA from 30 July to 2 August where he’ll present at the 8th International Conference on Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete.

Organized by Virginia Tech, and sponsored by both the American Society of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), this is a great opportunity for attendees to find out about latest developments in composite construction. The conference has also been timed to coincide with the publication of new design standards in USA, Europe and, closer to home – in New Zealand and Australia.

For HERA, it allows us to both upskill and benchmark ourselves against the rest of the world, as well as learn of new composite solutions which could be utilised or improved by our members.

Stephen will be sharing insights into the development of the first joint Australian and New Zealand design standards for steel and composite bridges AS/NZS 5100.6. This work was carried out in collaboration with Brian Uy and Won Hee Kang and looks at our journey to update portions of these standards to align with international standards. In some cases – significantly improving guidelines to increase design efficiencies and productivity to deliver more cost efficient designs.

For HERA, it is hoped that the knowledge gained from the conference will result in improved design rules or new products, causing composite solutions to become more competitive, and lead to business opportunities for our members.

And if you’re attending the conference yourself – be sure to see Stephen present on Tuesday 1 August, 10.30am Technical Session E.2: Bridges.
