Call for comment: Have your say in shaping the new steel corrosion protection guide for Aotearoa

Steel is the backbone of Aotearoa New Zealand’s infrastructure – providing strength, durability, and versatility to the built environment.

However, ensuring the longevity of steel structures requires a thorough understanding of corrosion and protection strategies and up-to-date guidance. That’s why we’re now releasing HERA R4-133: New Zealand Steelwork Corrosion and Protection Guide for public comment until 30 April 2025.

This significant revision will update one of the sector’s most widely used resources – and this is your chance to influence this important resource and ensure it meets the real-world needs of structural engineers, fabricators, contractors, and asset owners working across Aotearoa New Zealand.

A major step forward in steel protection

Authored by Raed El-Sarraf, Willie Mandeno, and Hanieh Ghominejad from WSP, alongside Kaveh Andisheh from HERA, this updated guide brings fresh, practical updates that integrate the latest research, best practices, and regulatory developments to keep New Zealand’s steel industry at the forefront of corrosion protection and durability. It delivers:

✅ Alignment with the latest New Zealand standards
Incorporating the latest requirements for durability design of structural steel, including SNZ TS 3404 (Standard New Zealand Technical Specification 3404, ensuring a more consistent and effective industry-wide approach.

✅ Advancements in protective coatings and steelwork protection
Integrating the latest research and development in protective coatings, coating system specifications, best practices for steelwork protection, and insights into maintenance and recoating strategies to help engineers, asset owners, and contractors make informed decisions to extend the service life of steel structures.

✅ Fire resistance of galvanised structural systems
Exploring the fire resistance of galvanised structural steel and providing guidance on how galvanised coatings interact with fire protection systems – essential industry insight for structural fire design.

✅ Proposed amendments to SNZ TS 3404
Ensuring corrosion protection measures continue to evolve in response to real-world challenges and advancements in materials science.

Have your say!

We’re now inviting feedback on the revised HERA R4-133 across the industry. Your insights are  invaluable in ensuring that the guide meets industry needs and remains a trusted resource for steel protection in Aotearoa.
