Notice: New standard for welding supervisors and inspectors AS 2214.1. published

AS 2214.1:2024 Part 1 Welding Supervisors and Inspectors has now been released and HERA courses have been updated to aligned to it.

The competency of personnel involved in structural steelwork fabrication is a critical determinant of the quality, safety, and compliance of the finished product.

Proper training, qualifications, and experience across all levels are essential to meet the requirements of AS/NZS 5131: Structural Steelwork – Fabrication and Erection to deliver reliable, high-quality steel structures.

While the AS 2214 welding supervisor qualification is well established due to its alignment with the nation’s structural steelwork standards and the Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) programme, the welding inspector qualification has historically been less well defined under the AS/NZS 5131 framework.

This gap has now been addressed with the publication of AS 2214.1:2024 – Structural Steelwork – Qualification of Personnel Part 1: Welding Supervisors and Inspectors.

The new requirements for welding supervisors and inspectors

This new standard specifies the pre-examination qualifications and scope of examination required to grant certificates of qualification to welding supervisors, who oversee welders involved in steel structure fabrication; and welding inspectors who are responsible for inspecting structural steel welding.

The standard has been revised and retitled to reflect its expanded scope and is now designated as Part 1 of AS 2214. It aligns with:

  • the personnel qualifications and competencies outlined in AS/NZS 5131 – Structural Steelwork – Fabrication and Erection;
  • the latest edition of AS 1796 – Pressure Equipment – Qualification of Welders, Welding Supervisors, and Welding Inspectors; and
  • new requirements specific to the qualification of welding inspectors.

Your path to aligned qualifications

HERA has actively contributed to the development of AS 2214.1:2024 and in tandem, has also worked to prepare the industry for this transition.

We have done this by ensuring our Welding Inspector Level 1 course is now fully aligned with the requirements of this standard, so that attendees will receive a dual certificate starting from this year (2025).

There will be no changes to the overall structure of the welding supervisor and inspector courses, however, it is important to note that candidates must first achieve the Welding Supervisor qualification before they are able to progress to the Welding Inspector qualification.

These qualifications remain highly valued due to their alignment with the requirements for welding coordinators and inspectors as defined in: Section 7 of AS/NZS 5131, AS/NZS ISO 3834.2, ISO 14731, and SFC rules.

With places limited, now’s the time to secure your spot in one of our courses—check out our training options and take the next step in your certification journey. Please note, places are limited, so act now to avoid missing out!
