This report provides an updated summary of findings from BERLโ€™s 2018 analysis of the metals industryโ€™s contribution to living standards in New Zealand, focusing on how the industry enhances the governmentโ€™s identified four capitals critical to intergenerational wellbeing. The original 2018 study included comprehensive evidence such as HERA member surveys, expert interviews, and industry activity data. This updated report narrows its scope to recent documentation and data analysis, specifically focusing on ferrous metals manufacturing and excluding aluminium-related activities.

The report is structured around the four capitalsโ€”natural, human, social, and physical/financialโ€”and highlights both long-standing insights and new findings that illustrate the metals industryโ€™s role in supporting sustainable development. It also explores how these contributions align with government frameworks, connecting the four capitals (inputs) with the four wellbeings (outcomes) to emphasise the industryโ€™s broader impact on living standards in New Zealand. This resource is designed to help the metals industry understand and communicate its critical role in building a resilient and sustainable future.
