Update: HERA R4-156 – Seismic design of moment resisting steel frames

If you’re working on structural steel projects in seismic prone zones, our latest update around seismic design of moment resisting steel frames is a must-read.

We’re proud to release an newly revised HERA R4-156 Design Guide for Seismic Design of Moment Resisting Steel Frames (MRSF) – a vital resource for engineers involved in the design and construction of seismic-resistant steel structures for more safer, resilient structures in earthquake-prone areas.

Why is this important?

As seismic events increase in frequency and intensity worldwide, ensuring the resilience of our built environment has never been more important.

The seismic design of moment-resisting steel frames is a crucial component in achieving this, as well as ensuring engineers have access to the most up-to-date and effective design tools available which is why we have revised the HERA R4-156 design guide.

This will give engineers the latest insights and methodologies, helping them create safer, more resilient structures that protect people and property.

What’s new in this edition?

This update reflects feedback from industry professionals, aligning with our commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration across the sector to ensure the guide remains relevant and practical for real-world applications. Key changes include:

✅ Clearer clauses and commentary
We’ve refined the language ins response to engineer feedback,  making the guide easier to use and understand across all experience levels so it is accessible and actionable.

✅ Latest global research
Incorporates new international research and development on moment end plate steel connections, ensuring recommendations stay current with global best practices to enhance the safety and reliability of steel frames in seismic events.

✅ Integration with other HERA design guides
Content now aligns with our recently released HERA Diaphragm Seismic Design Guide (HERA R4-161, supporting a holistic and comprehensive approach to steel design for seismic resilience across your project.

✅ Worked example includes connection detailing
A key addition is the detailed connection design information now included in the work example. This will help engineers better understand the practical application of seismic design principles, particularly when designing and detailing steel connections in moment-resisting frames.

Looking ahead

The updated HERA R4-156 Design Guide is now available for download on our website. We encourage all engineers involved in the design of steel structures to make use of this valuable resource. With this revision, we continue to build on our legacy of excellence in steel design, reinforcing our mission to lead the way in innovation, sustainability, and safety in the construction industry.

We are excited to share this updated guide with you and look forward to hearing your feedback as we continue to evolve and improve our design resources for the benefit of the industry.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey toward a more resilient and sustainable future.
