This course is for those with three years experience in the welding/fabrication industry who want to gain expertise in structural steel welding. Course content
This course covers AS/NZS 2214 syllabus and Module 1 of the Welding Inspector Welding Technology requirements.
- The role and responsibilities of the welding supervisor and inspector
- Welding processes
- Welding procedure qualification
- Welding metallurgy
- Construction and design
- Welder qualification to AS/NZS 2980 and AS/NZS ISO 9606.1
- Fabrication and welding for seismic applications
- Compliance with welding and fabrication standards
- Weld defects and acceptance criteria
This course also covers quality management systems to AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS 5131, SFC and AS/NZS ISO 3834.
Facilitators will make extensive references to AS/NZS 1554 Structural steel welding – Part 1: Welding of steel structures.
Students must bring their own copy of the standard to the course.

Pre-requisites
You must meet the following requirements to qualify to attend this course:
- proficiency in the comprehension and writing of English as used in the engineering industry;
- proficiency in basic mathematics; and
- a minimum of three years experience in the welding/fabrication industry.
Qualifications – what’s in it for you?
On successful completion of the course, candidates will achieve:
- the Welding Supervisor qualification AS/NZS 2214-2019: Certification of welding supervisors – Structural steel welding as required by AS/NZS 5131 and the Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) scheme; and
- the HERA Certificate of Attainment covering the welding knowledge requirements for CBIP Elevating Work Platforms Inspectors – (Ref CBIP Doc. No: PRO-CER-09).
Completion of this course leads to:
HERA Welding Inspector Level 1
NB. To progress to HERA Welding Inspector Level 1, you must be able to show relevant experience in the metal working industry.

Delivery format and location
This training has a one-week (40 hour) classroom component which is offered in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland and Ōtautahi, Christchurch.
A distance learning component on the HERA e-learning platform follows the classroom course which has a series of assignments which must be completed.
Exam process
For the AS/NZS 2214 certificate and the HERA Welding Inspector WT1 module candidates must:
- attend the classroom course;
- complete the distance learning assignments; and
- pass two online examinations (65% pass mark):
- Paper A Welding “Theory and Technology” (3-hour exam).
- Paper B “Application of Standards” (2-hour exam).
For the HERA certificate of attainment candidates must:
- attend the classroom course or watch the online lectures;
- complete the distance learning assignments; and
- pass online examination Paper A Welding “Theory and Technology” (3-hour exam)

Patrick Fenemor
HERA Senior Welding Engineer
Patrick has expertise in all common joining processes and materials, and has worked across sectors including marine, structural, food-grade, aerospace, and petrochemical, supporting SMEs and multinational organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand. A long-time collaborator with HERA, Patrick has served on the HERA Welding Panel for over 16 years and is a founding member of the HERA ANB (Training) Board. Through his work at HERA he continues to leverage his technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to enhance welding capabilities and resilience in the heavy engineering sector.

Michail Karpenko
GM Welding Centre
Michail is an International Welding Engineer (IIW), a member of the Standards New Zealand and Australia Committees including WD-003 “Welding” and is actively involved in the revision and updating of welding standards such as AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS ISO 3834, DR ISO 17607, AS/NZS 5131. He was also involved in establishing the Fabricator Certification Scheme (SFC) and is a Lead Auditor for this scheme.

HERA Senior Welding Engineer
Ozgur has worked extensively on the delivery of industrial plant projects globally in many roles at different levels in the fabrication and construction of boilers, reactors, pressure vessels, structural steels and piping systems of oil & gas, nuclear and thermal power (CCGT and coal fired) plants in Turkiye, Russia, Albania, Libya and Iraq. He was a lecturer of welding inspection courses at international training organisations in Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia and South America.

Do I have to do the exams straight after this course?
No, however it is wise to sit the exams while the information is fresh to you. Ultimately you can sit the exams anytime they are held after attending and completing the course work.
How often is this course held?
The Welding Supervisor course is held twice a year in both Auckland and Christchurch.
What can this course lead to?
On completion, attendees are able to progress forward to the HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 qualification.
The pathway for qualification is as follows:
Welding Supervisor qualification AS/NZS 2214-2019: Certification of welding supervisors – Structural steel welding as required by AS/NZS 5131 and the Steel Fabricator Certification (SFC) scheme.
Welding Inspector qualifications; this course is the prerequisite for:
HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 including Certificate of Proficiency in Visual Testing of Welded Joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637, and IIW International Welding Inspector IWI-B.
CBIP Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) this covers the welding technology “Knowledge Requirements” (Ref. CBIP Doc. No PRO-CER-07).
I have an international welding qualification, can I transfer the qualification to New Zealand or skip the Welding Supervisor course and just do the Welding Inspector qualifications?
Unfortunately, no. Our qualifications are to New Zealand standards which will be different to what you have learnt overseas. As such, you’ll need to demonstrate understanding of New Zealand Standard requirements which are gained in this course.
Can I skip this course and just do the Welding Inspection course?
For HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 and IIW qualifications this course is mandatory to completion and pass before you are able to register.
For CBIP CWI the course is recommended.
If I just do the course but do not take the exams what do I get?
An attendance Certificate is available detailing the course content.

Welding supervisor exam
This exam is available to those who have successfully completed the HERA Welding Supervisor course. It provides you with either a HERA certificate of attainment for CBIP elevating work platforms inspectors, or a AS/NZS 2214 2214 certificate for HERA Welding Inspector WT1 module candidates (dependant on the papers taken).

Welding inspector exam
This exam is available to those who have successfully completed the HERA Welding Inspector Level 1 course. It provides you with qualifications of HERA Welding Inspector – steel structures and a HERA certificate of proficiency in visual testing of welded joints to AS/NZS ISO 17637:2019, allowing you to perform the essential duties of a welding inspector within the scope of AS/NZS 5131 Section 7 and Appendix I.
