About this software

Key features

Streamlined corrosion classification: quickly identifies the correct corrosivity zone for structural steel projects, simplifying classifications near coastal areas and zone intersections.

Enhanced precision: calculates proximity to coastal boundaries and factors in site-specific conditions such as saltwater distance, coastal aspects, and prevailing winds.

Time-saving: eliminates the need for manual reference to data tables from TS3404 and reduces labour-intensive steps in macro-climate classification.

User-friendly interface: provides clear visuals and intuitive navigation, enabling designers and engineers to make informed decisions with ease.

Sustainability driven: supports the durability and longevity of steel structures and contributes to sustainable construction practices by optimising material performance.

Streamlining corrosion mapping processes

This digital tool was developed as part of our Sustainability Research Fund initiative in 2022, aimed at increasing the durability and lifespan of steel structures for more sustainable construction outcomes.

Previously, the corrosion classification maps in TS3404 did not account for areas within 500 metres of coastlines and designers working in these regions had to consult additional data tables to determine the macro-climate classification. While this process was straightforward, it was time-consuming and labour-intensive, requiring engineers to calculate distances to saltwater, assess whether conditions involved calm water or breaking surf, and factor in coastal aspects and prevailing winds. Determining classifications near the intersection of different corrosivity zones added further complexity.

By transitioning to a digital format, this digital tool streamlines the process, enabling designers and engineers to quickly and accurately identify the correct corrosivity zone for their structural steel. Not only does this eliminates guesswork and saves valuable time, it also allows users to see precisely how close their site is to corrosion boundaries and make informed decisions with ease and efficiency.
